Padis Jewelry
Our showrooms display an incredible array of certified loose diamonds as well as jewelry from the world’s most desirable designers and watchmakers.
Does your jewelry collection include pieces passed down to you from family members? Pieces which have sentimental value but are not your style and which you never wear? We understand that while you may not want to sell the pieces outright, you might want to consider having the jewelry repurposed into something that better reflects your personal style.
If you like the idea, go ahead and have the pieces appraised by a reputable jeweler. An appraisal will give you the value of the jewelry as well as what precious metals were used and the quality of the gemstones or diamonds. At Padis Jewelry, we have an American Gem Society (AGS) certified gemologist appraiser (CGA) on staff who can tell you all about your jewelry. We also have experience in redesigning jewelry and can help you repurpose your unworn jewelry into a design you will love and wear, yet will still have its sentimental value. Moreover if you already have an idea of what you want, trust our jewelers to expertly guide you through creating it. Repurposing old jewelry can help alleviate some of the cost of a brand new custom piece. In addition, if you have any gold or platinum jewelry you would like to sell, Padis Jewelry can give you a quote based on today’s metal prices. Please visit our website for contact information to schedule an appointment with the Bay Area’s foremost jewelry experts. When buying diamonds from Padis Jewelry, you can feel confident you are getting what you paid for as every diamond over 0.40 carats comes with an independent grading report that assesses the overall quality and authenticity. Our diamonds are graded at the most trusted and accredited diamond grading laboratories in the industry including the US division of AGS, Forevermark, and GIA.
To give you an idea of what you will see in your diamond’s grading report, you can take a look at a sample GIA grading report on their website. According to the GIA, their reports represent the “highest standard of reliability, consistency and integrity.” Your report will include information on the 4Cs (the GIA is the creator of the 4Cs) of your stone and assess the Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight. You will also get a plotted diagram charting the clarity characteristics as well as a graphic representation of the stone’s proportions. If your diamond is in the D-to-Z color range, your report will also have a GIA Cut grade. The Diamond Cut grade describes the “components of brightness, fire, scintillation, polish, and symmetry, as well as weight and durability concerns, into a single overall grade for cut quality for standard round brilliants.” Another service offered by the GIA is their “Report Check” that allows you to confirm that the information on your report matches the archived GIA report database. All you need to do is to enter your report number on their online search tool. Also if you have a diamond you want to have authenticated and graded by the GIA Lab, you can submit it to them for a fee. According to the Kimberley Process statistics, there were 22 countries that produced rough diamonds in 2014. Russia, Botswana, Canada, Angola, South Africa, and Namibia are among the world’s top producers of rough diamonds and make up 90% of production by value.
Russia’s huge Mir mine in eastern Siberia is an enormous crater-sized pit that is 1,722-feet-deep and a diameter of nearly one mile across. The mine’s open pit operations ended in 2004 and was replaced with underground tunnels. The Mir mine produced over six million carats of rough diamonds in 2014 and has an estimated value of $16 billion including the diamonds that have already been mined and the amount of diamonds in reserve. The Jwaneng mine, owned by Debswana, is a joint operation between De Beers and the government of Botswana. Located in south-central Botswana, it is the richest diamond mine in the world and the country’s most important asset. Opened in 1982, the huge pit mine is more than a mile long at its widest point and is currently producing about 10.6 million carats a year. The world’s largest, new diamond mine is Gahcho Kué, which has the potential to become one of Canada's most high-grade and long-lived diamond mines. Located in the Northwest Territories of Canada, the Gahcho Kué Mine is a joint venture between De Beers Canada Inc. (51%) and Mountain Province Diamonds Inc. (49%). Discovered in 1995, the site has been under construction until it began producing diamonds in late September. The mine is expected to produce an average of 4.5 million carats a year for an estimated twelve years. The Gahcho Kué’s opening comes at a good time as two of Canada’s other large mines; the Ekati and Diavik are nearing the end of their production. Our carefully selected suppliers regulate strict labor and environmental standards and are able to demonstrate a complete chain of custody for their diamonds.
As we mentioned in an additional post, conflict diamonds have been responsible for funding wars and hostile conflicts in countries throughout Africa. To solve this problem, governments, organizations and the diamond industry met in 2000 to find a way “to stop the trade in conflict diamonds and ensure that diamond purchases were not financing violence by rebel movements and their allies seeking to undermine legitimate governments.” What evolved from these meetings was the formation of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), which was first implemented in 2003. The KPCS is a set of requirements designed to control rough diamond production and trade, and to eradicate conflict diamonds from the world’s diamond supply. While some problems remain with KPCS, the intent of the agreement is to impose rules that members must follow in order to certify shipments of rough diamonds as ‘conflict free’ and keep conflict diamonds from entering the marketplace. Each member state must put in place national legislation and internal controls that regulates exports and imports. In addition participants must commit to rules regarding transparency and the exchange of statistical data. Another component to the agreement is that members may only legally trade with other members in good standing. Most importantly all international shipments of “rough diamonds must be accompanied by a KP certificate guaranteeing that they are conflict-free.” The diamond industry states that today 99% of diamonds are KP certified and come from a conflict free source. Source: kimberleyprocess.com/en/about As early as 2800 BC, Egyptians wore a single silver or gold wire ring on the third finger of their left hand, which they believed was directly connected to the heart. During the 2nd century BC, Pliny the Elder described the custom of grooms presenting their bride with a gold ring to wear at the wedding ceremony and on special events. The woman was given a ring made from iron to wear at home to signify a husband’s ownership of his wife.
Archduke Maximillian of Austria is credited with commissioning the first ever diamond engagement ring for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy in 1477. The ring was designed in the shape of an “M,” fashioned from a series of thin, flat diamonds. Wealthy European aristocracy and nobility quickly followed suit by bestowing diamond rings as a token of love. During the 1700 and 1800s, engagement rings were often a mix of diamonds and other gemstones, enamel and metals. The American Gem Society states that many of these rings were designed in the shape of flowers and called “posey rings.” In Victorian times, rings using diamonds and gemstones to spell out words of endearment were common as well as rings made from the hair of their loved one. Diamond engagement rings really gained widespread popularity when in 1938; the DeBeers diamond company hired N.W. Ayer, a New York–based ad agency, to create an ad campaign to boost diamond sales. The successful campaign featured famous movie stars adorned with beautiful diamond rings and was responsible for increasing diamond sales by 50 percent in just three years. By the late 1940s, the ad agency introduced the slogan still used by DeBeers today - "A Diamond Is Forever." Padis Jewelry, a family-owned business, has been a trusted source for buying exquisite engagement rings, fine jewelry and certified loose diamonds since 1974.
