Padis Jewelry
Our showrooms display an incredible array of certified loose diamonds as well as jewelry from the world’s most desirable designers and watchmakers.
Padis Jewelry is a family-owned business with a connection to the jewelry industry that goes all the way back to the founder, Steve Padis’ college days at the University of California in Berkeley, CA. Steve got his start in the industry by stringing beads, which grew into creating sterling silver, turquoise, and gold chain jewelry after graduation. Shortly thereafter, through contacts in the industry, Steve met Judy, his life-long partner both in marriage and business.
By 1974, Steve’s passion for precious metals and diamonds lead to the inception of the Steve Padis Jewelry brand. The brand began the family’s decades-long love affair for exquisite diamonds, gems and fine jewelry and established the Padis name as one of the best jewelers in San Francisco. Now 40 years later, Padis Jewelry is still owned and operated by Steve, his wife Judy and daughter, Alexis and consists of three San Francisco showrooms and a store in St. Helena, CA. Our three showrooms in the city are located at The Jewelry Center on Utah Street. The Gift Center and The Padis Designer Galleria are on Brannan Street. Here, you will discover a huge collection of exquisite loose diamonds (we have approximately 10,000 stones in our inventory) and the world’s finest jewelry from some of the most sought-after designers. To visit our showrooms, we ask that you set up an appointment, which can be easily done with a phone call or using our convenient online form. Our other store is located in northern California’s legendary wine country, in beautiful St. Helena in the Napa Valley. Along with stunning designer jewelry and watches from the world’s most desirable designers and watchmakers as well as certified loose diamonds, we also are a unique gift store. Please visit our website to learn more about Padis Jewelry and to set up an appointment to see firsthand our beautiful collection. As a family-owned business, it is important to us that our customers are treated to a first-class shopping experience every time they walk into a Padis Jewelry showroom. This is why we are committed to offering our customers the world’s finest jewelry along with the expertise of some of the industry’s most knowledgeable jewelry consultants.
In fact, any time you walk into our friendly, welcoming showrooms, we have at least two GIA (Gemological Institute of America Inc.) Graduate Gemologists on staff at all times. The GIA Graduate Gemologist program is the most prestigious credential in the industry, and all participants receive comprehensive information regarding diamonds and colored stones. During the coursework, our staff was introduced to both technical and practical skills including the 4Cs, the International Diamond Grading System, and the Colored Stone Grading System. Padis’ Graduate Gemologists were trained on how to use the latest gemological equipment and procedures in order to identify and grade different types of gemstones. Their hands-on experience with how the GIA grading system and the 4Cs are used to accurately rate the value of diamonds allow them to help you make smart decisions and get the best value. According to the GIA, they are “world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls.” The organization was established in 1931 and operates as a nonprofit institute recognized as a leading source of knowledge, standards, and education in gems and jewelry. The GIA established the “4Cs” (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight) as well as the International Diamond Grading System™ in the 1940s that are the standards we still used today. At Padis, we feel that by having such knowledgeable consultants as a part of our non-commissioned sales staff guarantees customers receive more reliable, educated information about the diamonds and gemstones they are buying. We encourages you to set up an appointment with one of our experts and let them teach you about the four Cs of diamonds, the colorful world of gemstones, and more. Source: gia.edu/gem-education/program-graduate-gemologist When you buy a certified diamond, you know just what you are getting. The certification process grades and documents the quality of the diamond by assessing the 4Cs of the stone: cut, clarity, carat and color as well as provides other details. It also offers the buyer the assurance that the diamond is of the correct value and has been inspected by an independent lab. Furthermore, if you are going to insure a costly high-grade diamond, many insurers require the stone to be certified.
Graduate gemologists use high-powered microscopes and other sensitive instruments to compile the written certification report. While not an appraisal, the report is a detailed blueprint of the stone’s quality characteristics and offers other information such as whether the stone has been treated or enhanced to improve its color or clarity. Also along with the technical measurements and evaluations of the 4Cs, the report generally includes a diagram of the stone’s inclusions as well as top and side views and a chart that details the weight, color grade, cuts, and angles. Among Padis Jewelry’s huge inventory of exquisite diamonds, any diamond we sell larger than 0.40 carats comes with a report from an accredited, independent laboratory such as the United States divisions of AGS, Forevermark, GIA or EGL USA. Please see our website for more information on buying diamonds as well as to browse through our extensive collection of certified loose diamonds and gemstones. Gemologists estimate that a round cut diamond may cost as much as 30% more than a similar fancy shaped diamond for several reasons. For one thing, it takes much more raw material to cut round brilliant diamonds and to ensure the demanding proportions that maximize the potential brightness of the stone are met. It is also due to the much larger demand for round cut diamonds.
It is a common misconception that a diamond’s cut is the shape of the stone such as round or oval. Rather the cut of the diamond describes how well the stone’s facets interact with the light. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says the proportions of a precision-cut standard round brilliant diamond affect the brightness of the diamond (the amount of internal and external white light reflected). It also affects the fire, which is the scattering of the white light into all the colors of the rainbow, and finally the scintillation or the amount of sparkle the diamond produces. They add that, “precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.” The “ideal cut” allows the maximum amount of light to return through the top of the diamond and takes into account the depth, table size, crown height and angle, girdle thickness and more. Gemologists carefully evaluate a rough stone to determine the best cut that will offer the maximum clarity, color and carat weight. While all of this may sound complicated, it does help to have a rudimentary understanding of how the cut affects the stone’s sparkle and brilliance as well as to only shop with a highly-respected jeweler. Diamonds are an investment and it pays to make an educated decision. As one recent customer explains, her Padis jewelry consultant was not only very patient but made it a “lovely experience.” She adds that the consultant, Laurel, helped them to find the perfect wedding bands and to stay within budget. Another customer relates how she saw styles she had not seen anywhere else and appreciated the huge selection of loose diamonds. She writes, “Alexis was so sweet and fun to work with! We loved the champagne and the no-pressure atmosphere, and can't wait to go back for our wedding bands!” We also love the story of a man’s future in-laws who encouraged him to go to Padis Jewelry and to meet with jewelry consultant, Kim. His fiancée’s grandparents shopped at Padis over thirty years ago and her parents worked with Kim to buy their engagement and wedding rings. He explains that after meeting with Kim, they found the PERFECT ring. As he says, “just ask my fiancée. who says she wouldn't have been able to find a better ring. Today, Mémoire explains that their extruded mountings are “absolutely the finest made mountings in the world and rare in the market due to the complicated production process.” The resulting rings from this proprietary process are extremely strong and dense metal bands with laser cut mountings that are guaranteed for exactness and consistency. At Padis Jewelry, our collection of Mémoire includes pure Platinum and 18K gold pieces from the Odessa, Purity, Bouquet, and Lovers Lock collections in exquisite diamond bands, earrings and lockets. Pieces which have sentimental value but are not your style and which you never wear? We understand that while you may not want to sell the pieces outright, you might want to consider having the jewelry repurposed into something that better reflects your personal style.
If you like the idea, go ahead and have the pieces appraised by a reputable jeweler. An appraisal will give you the value of the jewelry as well as what precious metals were used and the quality of the gemstones or diamonds. At Padis Jewelry, we have an American Gem Society (AGS) certified gemologist appraiser (CGA) on staff who can tell you all about your jewelry. We also have experience in redesigning jewelry and can help you repurpose your unworn jewelry into a design you will love and wear, yet will still have its sentimental value. Moreover if you already have an idea of what you want, trust our jewelers to expertly guide you through creating it. Repurposing old jewelry can help alleviate some of the cost of a brand new custom piece. In addition, if you have any gold or platinum jewelry you would like to sell, Padis Jewelry can give you a quote based on today’s metal prices.
